Brian Weick
University of the Pacific
Brian Weick has studied the dimensional stability of digital magnetic tapes since the early 1990’s. His research has focused on how the tapes undergo dimensional changes when they are stored in a reel for long time periods, and the influence of environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. The research he performs is experimentally-based with a focus on understanding fundamental properties and characteristics of the constitutive materials used to make digital magnetic tapes. Information from these experimental studies can be fed into numerical models that predict the dimensions of magnetic tapes after archival storage in a reel, and whether or not information written onto these tapes can still be read-back by a tape drive if the tapes are stored for long time periods.
After he earned his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Union College, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Virigina Tech, and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering Science also from Virginia Tech, Dr. Weick began studying magnetic tapes as a postdoctoral researcher at Ohio State with Professor Bharat Bhushan in 1993. This work continued when Dr. Weick started as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of the Pacific in northern California in 1995, where he also served as the Department Chair for 15 years and taught 13 different engineering courses. From 2004 through 2013 he was funded by the Information Storage Industry Consortium based in San Diego to continue his research on magnetic tapes. Dr. Weick recently published his 31st peer-reviewed paper, and is currently on sabbatical through Fall 2015 with the goal of publishing more of his research results.
